White Center Pedestrian Improvement Project

Construction began on August 17, 2026

Road closed sign at the project site, 10th Ave SW between SW 112th Street and SW 116th Street.

On August 17, 2026, King County Road Services closed 10th Ave SW between SW 112th Street and SW 116th Street to complete pedestrian improvements that will make it easier and safer for people to cross the road at three intersections in White Center.

Status update

August 17, 2026

Construction for this project began on August 17, 2026, and last through early September. Work will occur on weekdays between 7 am and 3 pm. To minimize disruptions during the upcoming school year as much as possible, crews working for King County will close 10th Ave SW between SW 112th Street and SW 116th Street each weekday from 7 am to 3 pm through September 2, 2026. A signed detour will be in place. Local access will be maintained.

There will be one evening during construction when 10th Ave SW will close overnight near the project intersections. Local access will be maintained with detours in place. Check MyCommute for exact dates.

Following the closure, crews may need to complete additional work. A lane restriction will be in place with flaggers directing two-way traffic through a single open lane during construction hours. If this occurs, school buses will be allowed through the work zone.

Work on SW 102nd Street at 13th Avenue SW will begin in early September and will primarily require work on the sidewalk and corner as crews install flashing lights and high-visibility signs.
Some evening and weekend work may occur, if needed.

This project is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled or delayed due to material, crew, or equipment availability.

We will continue to update this website and our MyCommute map throughout construction. To receive project information and updates via text or email, please subscribe to our Road Alert service.

Overview/project description

White Center is one of King County’s most densely populated unincorporated communities. Many residents rely on walking, biking, or public transit to get around. Safe sidewalks and crossings are important for people of all ages and abilities, especially children, seniors, and those using wheelchairs or strollers.

King County will improve pedestrian crossings in three intersections that are often used by children in White Center. This includes locations near Evergreen Senior High School, Cascade Middle School, and Steve Cox Memorial Park:

Improvements on 10th Ave SW between SW 112th St and SW 114th St will include:

  • Sidewalk curb extensions reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians in the crosswalk
  • Raised crosswalks slow vehicles and increase pedestrian visibility
  • Lane markings guide traffic and increase visibility
  • Additional signage reminds drivers to be aware of the crosswalk

Improvements on SW 102nd Street at 13th Ave SW will include:

  • Flashing lights and high-visibility signs alert drivers when pedestrians are crossing

What to expect during construction

  • 10th Ave SW between SW 112th Street and SW 116th Street is now closed each weekday from 7 am to 3 pm through September 2, 2026. A signed detour will be in place. Local access will be maintained. School buses will be allowed through the closure.
  • There will be one evening during construction when the road will close overnight near the intersections. Local access will be maintained with detours in place. Check MyCommute for exact dates.
  • Following the closure, crews may need to complete additional work under a lane restriction with flaggers directing two-way traffic through a single open lane during construction hours.
  • Construction may require crosswalks to be closed for up to two weeks. When the corner is closed, a signed detour will direct pedestrians across the street.
  • There will be temporary pedestrian detours when the crosswalk and curbs are closed for construction. Pedestrian detours will shift throughout the project.
  • Sidewalk corners of intersections may be closed even when crews are not working.
  • Workers may need to use parking spaces that are adjacent to active construction. Look for round-the-clock no parking signs when these spaces are occupied.
  • Adjacent lane closures on the road are possible during construction. Flaggers may direct traffic when crews are working.
  • Possible road closures while cement cures on raised sidewalks.
  • Project updates will be made on this website and on MyCommute website.
  • Contact us with any questions or if you need or want information translated into a different language and/or format.

Construction hours and noise

  • Crews may work Monday through Friday, 7 am to 3 pm
  • We are coordinating with the Highline School District to minimize impacts during the school year.
  • People living or working nearby may hear noise from jackhammers, trucks, generators, and other construction equipment.

Budget and funding resources

This project’s budget is $574,000, with $500,000 from the WSDOT Move Ahead Washington Pedestrian and Bicycle Tier award and $74,000 from the King County Roads local funds.

Project timeline

  • Construction began: August 17, 2026
  • Construction ends (anticipated): Fall 2026

Frequently asked questions

Pedestrians may be detoured to the opposite side of the street during construction. Each curb ramp or crosswalk may require the corner of the sidewalk to be closed for up to two weeks. When the corner is closed, a signed detour will direct pedestrians across the street.

Working with concrete, asphalt, and pavement markings are weather dependent. This work cannot be done if it is very wet or very cold. It is possible that some of the work may need to be rescheduled due to weather conditions.

As part of this project, we will be raising the crosswalks at the intersections of 10th Ave SW & SW 112th St and 10th Ave SW & SW 114th St. These raised features may slightly reduce fire truck speeds during emergency responses in the area. We are coordinating closely with local emergency services to inform them of this change and minimize delays in service times.

This project is only funded to replace the curb ramps and install crosswalks. Construction will affect small areas of grass and a few shrubs which will be restored as a part of the project.

We will do our best to keep community members informed about the project. Project updates and active construction location information will be shared in the following ways:
