King County Immigrant and Refugee Commission Application Process

You can access application materials on this page and apply online. You may include the following documents in support of your application, but the materials are not required:

NOTE: Selected applicants must submit ten (10) endorsement signatures and two (2) letters of recommendation via email to kcirc@kingcounty.gov within 4 weeks of being notified of selection to the Commission.

  • When selected to join the Commission

  • Provide two (2) letters of recommendation. If applying to be an organizational representative, one (1) letter must be from the affiliated immigrant and refugee supporting organization. 

  • Submit signatures and letters to kcirc@kingcounty.gov within 4 weeks of being notified of selection to the Commission.

Responsibilities:

KCIRC meets monthly and is comprised of 13 voting members and 4 non-voting members. Member duties include:

  • Assist and advise the executive and legislative branch on issues, programs, and policies impacting immigrant and refugee communities;

  • Collaborate with the County to ensure effective outreach and engagement to immigrant and refugee communities;

  • Advise on the County’s role with other government entities;

  • Assist with the development and implementation of King County policies and regulations protecting and impacting immigrant and refugee communities;

  • Assist with development and review of County initiatives to ensure that the priorities of immigrants and refugees are incorporated;

  • Evaluating County programs and services from the perspective of immigrant and refugee communities;

  • Continual review of resources and support for issues affecting immigrant and refugee communities;

  • Increase public awareness of immigrants and refugees and their contributions to our community;

  • Promote naturalization as a path toward civic and economic integration.

Qualifications:

  • Commissioners must reside in King County and be immersed in one or more immigrant and refugee communities;

  • Commissioners shall reflect the diversity of ethnicities, gender, age, sexual orientation, professional backgrounds, socioeconomic status, and geographic areas that make up the fabric of County communities;

  • Commissioners should be well-versed on issues affecting immigrant and refugee communities locally and nationally;

  • Individuals representing immigrant-led and/or faith-based organizations; or with personal experiences as refugees or asylees are encouraged to apply

 

Term:

 

Terms of each appointment shall be for three years.

 

Time Commitment:

Commissioners can expect a time commitment of around 5 hours per month. Elected officers will need to commit more time to planning meetings and leading the commission. In addition, commissioners are expected to attend the KCIRC Annual Retreat (full day) and the KCIRC Annual Community Event. Commissioners will be reimbursed for mileage at the standard county reimbursement rate for travel to and from scheduled commission meetings, workgroup meetings, and community meetings, and for parking at meetings outside of county facilitiesMembers attending meetings or conducting business related to the commission at county facilities shall have parking in the county garage paid.
