Hazardous waste home collection service helps meet customers where they are

A Black woman with grayish hair holds up a household cleaner bottle next to a number of other household cleaners and a bin to hold them all.

The Hazardous Waste Management Program (Haz Waste Program) kept 3,231,240 pounds of hazardous waste out of our environment in 2022. King County residents and small businesses bring much of that waste directly to our four hazardous waste disposal sites.

But what does safe disposal look like when you can’t get to a hazardous waste collection site?

To meet the needs of King County residents who are 65 years or older and people who are disabled, and who have no means of transportation to access disposal facilities, the Haz Waste Program offers home collections for these eligible individuals.

The Haz Waste Program’s home collection program is centered around expanding our services and making sure that our resources eliminate barriers to dispose of hazardous waste. Through this home collection service, the Haz Waste Program is able to serve customers where they are.

A quick glance at the home collection process

First, you’ll want to make sure you are eligible.

You qualify for the Program’s home collection service if you are a King County resident with no vehicle or are otherwise unable to access a hazardous waste collection site, and you are either:

  • 65 years or older
  • Living with a disability

Our call center representatives will take your information and walk you through the process of getting your items ready for home collection. Be ready to provide your name, address, telephone number, and the types and amounts of waste you have for collection.

A few tips to keep in mind if you are using our home collection service:

  • Wastes should be sealed and placed upright in boxes. Regular collection limits still apply, so be sure to verify.
  • For single-family homes, place your hazardous waste in a safe place outside the front of your home on the scheduled pickup date.
  • For multifamily homes (i.e. apartments), place your hazardous waste outside your unit door prior to staff arrival on the scheduled collection date.
  • Please note that home collection staff do not collect special wastes, including latex paint, tires, electronics, or medications.

If you qualify for a home collection, call the Haz Waste Help Line at 206-296-4692.
