King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn on Tuesday joined staff and students from Northwood Middle School to celebrate the honorary road designation of SE 184th St in Fairwood as Jaguar Way in recognition of the school’s mascot, the jaguar.

“Today we are recognizing how valuable Northwood Middle School is to the community of Fairwood,” Dunn said. “We are proud to call this road Jaguar Way to celebrate our students and honor the parents, teachers, administrators, and other staff who have worked hard to make sure children in Fairwood have access to the best education possible.”

With the expansion of the school to include sixth grade this year, Dunn brought legislation before the Council to give the street the honorary designation as a way to not only welcome the new students but to honor all its students and staff.

“The honorary naming of Jaguar Way is not just exciting for Northwood Middle School and the Fairwood community, but also for all of Kent School district,” said Kent School Board Vice President Meghin Margel. “It acknowledges the dedication and spirit of our students, staff, and families. Also, a huge thank you to Councilmember Dunn for his sponsorship and support.”

The school’s expansion introduces nearly 300 new students to the school, making the already treasured school all the more vital to the community of Fairwood.

Dunn worked with Northwood Middle School Principal Scott Haines, Margel, and students to come up with the legislation, and Council approved it this summer.

“We feel strongly that a school is only as good as the level of involvement of its community,” Haines said. “The ‘Jaguar Way’ honorary designation project exemplifies the building of community and ownership in school that we want to inspire in our students, not to mention how to accomplish a large task by working with government.”

Three new road signs have been added to the existing signs on SE 184th St. to show the designation.
