Metropolitan King County Council Vice Chair Jane Hague today joined more than 700 people from throughout the county in celebrating the life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. The keynote speaker at the 23rd annual celebration was civil rights legend Congressman John Lewis, who marched with Dr. King and spoke about his continuing effort to create Dr King’s “Beloved Community.”“The vision of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s beloved community, his lessons of creative non-violence, and his example of forgiveness and resolution are as relevant today as they were during the height of the Civil Rights movement 45 years ago,” said Hague. “His teachings and example continue to inspire new generations.”
Councilmember Hague also joined in recognizing the work of the next generation, Bellevue student Michelle Thomas, whose essay on the theme of the celebration, “The Dream Marches On,” won third place in the County’s Annual MLK Essay contest.
