Data Dashboard

The King County Superior Court Clerk’s Office, also known as the Department of Judicial Administration, is the independent record keeper for the King County Superior Court. The Clerk’s Office receives and indexes all documents filed in Superior Court cases and maintains documents and data related to every Superior Court case. The Clerk’s Office is also responsible for providing access to all publicly available court records.

About the Data Dashboard

This dashboard presents historical data and statistics of King County Superior Court on cases filed, disposed (resolved) by month or year, the pending active cases at the end of the month, as well as the time to reach disposition and the age of the pending cases.

Definitions

Filing: The number of cases filed in King County Superior Court.

Disposition: The number of cases resolved by the court and the manner of the resolutions. On this dashboard, the words "disposition" and "resolution" can be used interchangeably.

Pending Caseload: The number of cases that are active and under the court’s management at the reporting time. This data excludes cases on suspended status (on warrant, competency review, stay, appeal, arbitration).

Age of Disposed Case: The time from the case filing date to the disposition date, minus the time on suspended status (on warrant, competency review, stay, appeal, arbitration) if applicable. This can be viewed as the “net time” under the court’s jurisdiction.

Age of Pending Case: The time from the case filing date to the reporting time (usually at the end of the month), minus the time on suspense status (on warrant, competency review, stay, appeal, arbitration) if applicable.

Location: King County Superior Court has three court locations: the Maleng Regional Justice Center in the city of Kent (KNT); and the King County Courthouse (KCCH) and the Clark Children and Family Justice Center (CCFJC) in Seattle (SEA). Cases filed at KCCH and CCFJC have a single SEA designation. Hence, cases presented here have two designations: KNT and SEA based on pre-defined geographic areas.

How to Use the Data Dashboard

The dashboard presents filing information since 1980, the disposition information since 1990, and the monthly pending caseload since 2018. The data shown on this dashboard are downloaded from the production database and are static. It does not reflect real time changes. The data is updated annually.

The dashboard is divided into 4 main sections: Case Filing, Case Disposition, Active Pending Caseload, and Glossary and Definition

  • For Case Disposition or resolution, there are two subtabs: Disposition Category (manner of disposition) and Disposition Age (time to reach disposition).
  • There is a subtab under Active Pending Caseload showing the age of pending cases from the filing date to the reporting time.
  • The 3 subtabs under Glossary and Definition serve as a resource to look up the definitions of case types, causes of action, and the disposition categories (resolution manners).

Dashboard is Interactive

  1. The dashboard is interactive. Click the tabs at the top to access different areas and the subtabs. Hovering your cursor over the graphs will cause pop-ups with additional information to appear.
  2. Use the check boxes and drop down menus on the left to select a specific location, particular year and month, specific case type and cause of action to view the data. For unfiltered overall data, make sure all the check boxes on the left sides are unchecked (cleared).

  3. Use the arrows just above the graphs to change the displayed information if desired, for example, from annual numbers to monthly numbers.

Dashboard Updates

The Data Dashboard will be updated once per year with data at the year-end.  Click HERE and scroll down to view the monthly and quarterly statistics for the current year.
