An adult male inmate in the custody of the King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention died early this morning, July 3, 2009. The inmate was found at 2:26 a.m. by staff during a routine security check.
Staff responded immediately, initiating life saving measures and contacting Medic One, which arrived at 2:37 a.m. to continue response efforts until the person was pronounced dead at 2:44 a.m. The inmate had been booked into the King County Correctional Facility on October 29, 2008.
The cause and manner of death from the King County Medical Examiner's Office is pending. State law requires that the King County Medical Examiner conduct an autopsy on all in-custody deaths. Public Health - Seattle & King County is seeking permission from family members to release further details of the inmate's medical condition and history.
As part of the standard review process for jail deaths, the King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention will be working with Public Health - Seattle & King County to conduct an investigation.
