Story
King County residents are invited to provide public comment on the nomination of eight historic county roads as community landmarks at a public hearing hosted by the King County Landmarks Commission.
The event is scheduled for:
7 p.m., Thursday, June 25
High Point Village
1777 Highpoint St.
Enumclaw, Wash.
The corridors have been identified as having unique qualities meriting special recognition because they contribute to the distinctive quality and identity of their respective neighborhoods and the county as a whole.
The nominated corridors are:
- Osceola Loop (S.E. 448th – S.E. 456th Way)
- S.E. Green Valley Road
- S.E. Issaquah-Fall City Road
- Dockton Road S.W.
- Westside Highway S.W. – S.W. Cedarhurst Road
- W. Snoqualmie River Road
- W. Snoqualmie Valley Road N.E. – N.E. Carnation Farm Road
- Old Cascade Scenic Highway
Several of the roads follow long-established Native American footpaths, which have created passageways characterized by graceful contours that hug the landscape, are adjacent to significant historic properties, and offer views of quintessential northwest landscapes.
As a result of a federally-funded grant program, the county’s Roads Services Division nominated these distinctive corridors after spending a year collecting information, poring over old maps, taking photographs of roadside features, and talking to community members.
Members of the King County Landmarks Commission will take public comments into consideration before determining whether the lands meet community landmark designation criteria.
