Story

People building Hundreds of local and regional jobs will be created or continued in King County as a result of federal stimulus grant money coming to the county. A new report from King County Executive Kurt Triplett outlines 39 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) stimulus funding grants King County applied for earlier this year.

So far, the county has received $78,590,916 in grant funds for King County programs or projects. Decisions are pending on another $77,826,336 in funding for the county.

The grants awarded to date represent an estimated 192 jobs created or retained in categories ranging from housing, human services and public safety, to health, technology and transportation. A number of the pending awards could fund 604 other jobs that may be created or retained in King County.

King County applied for the grants in hopes of gaining additional resources to help the residents, businesses and regional partners in King County avoid layoffs and mitigate budgetary challenges facing all governments during this economic downturn.

“This money will help us provide a number of services, including improving public safety, water quality and transportation, restoring habitat, providing housing for working families, and health services to our most vulnerable residents,” said King County Executive Kurt Triplett. “All of these efforts will help us create or continue funding jobs that keep our region’s economic engine running, but it is important to note that ARRA funds are not a complete solution and we must continue to work collaboratively as a region and state on long term funding solutions.”

King County has created an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act stimulus funding web site to provide transparency and accountability to the public and other governments, and to make it easy to track the progress of all ARRA grants sought by King County departments and agencies - from application to award and implementation.

The site lists grants by topic and agency and will be updated monthly to reflect each grant’s status, as well as any additional grants for which King County has applied.
