Annexation of North Highline unincorporated area by city of Burien now complete

Summary

Residents in the southern portion of the North Highline Potential Annexation Area are now set to officially receive services from the city of Burien as a result of an interlocal agreement adopted this week by the Metropolitan King County Council and the Burien City Council.

Story

Residents in the southern portion of the North Highline Potential Annexation Area are now set to officially receive services from the city of Burien as a result of an interlocal agreement adopted this week by the Metropolitan King County Council and the Burien City Council.

“Having these urban unincorporated communities join Burien preserves the quality of local services for residents,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine, who thanked both councils for their actions. “It means more local control and more revenue options for the residents of Burien for funding the urban level of services people expect.”

The new agreement takes effect 10 days from yesterday’s council actions and expands the city of Burien to include more than 14,200 residents of the unincorporated area.

In January, Executive Constantine worked with Burien Mayor Joan McGilton to reach agreement on parks transfers related to the annexation. As a result, King County will transfer six local parks, including Puget Sound Park, to Burien.

The city of Burien will contract with the King County Sherriff’s office to provide police services to the newly annexed area, thereby ensuring a seamless public safety transition for residents. Special districts such as water, sewer, fire and schools serving the annexed neighborhoods are not affected by the annexation.

North Highline is the most economically and ethnically diverse urban unincorporated area in King County. It is bordered by Seattle, Burien, SeaTac and Tukwila and includes the White Center and Boulevard Park communities, as well as several other smaller neighborhoods.

Residents in the southern portion of North Highline last fall approved the annexation ballot measure with more than 55 percent of the vote. The annexation of the southern portion of North Highline officially took effect April 1, 2010.
