Story

King County residents who depend on the Evergreen Pool in North Highline will get more certainty of the pool’s presence thanks to a proposed ordinance King County Executive Dow Constantine transmitted to the King County Council today. The transmittal finalizes the newly-reopened pool’s transfer to the Highline School District.

“I’m pleased that King County could be part of this community effort to preserve a key recreational resource for the people of North Highline,” said Constantine. “I thank the Highline School District and White Water Aquatics for stepping up to get the Evergreen Pool back in service.”

In addition to transferring ownership of the pool through a public use agreement between the school district and county, the legislation would also provide $50,000 in county capital funds for improvements to the building and $50,000 in operating funds for the heavily-used facility.

The Evergreen Pool is located at 606 SW 112th St. in the unincorporated North Highline area. It was built 40 years ago through a King County Forward Thrust ballot measure and closed last October when the county could no longer fund the facility and operations. The pool was constructed on Highline School District property and ownership of the building reverted to the school district earlier this year after the completion of a 40-year lease. If the council approves the proposed legislation and public use agreement, in return for the county contributions, the district would agree to keep the pool open at least through Dec. 31 to provide recreational opportunities to the public. Currently, the district is working with non-profit WhiteWater Aquatics Management to handle day-to-day operations at the pool.
