Deputy Sheriff - entry-level
We are currently hiring as positions open up. Entry-level applicants who have not worked in law enforcement before will first need to create an account through Public Safety Testing and complete the testing process. This can take 4 to 6 months depending on several factors:

- Overtime paid at 1.5 x hourly rate - includes all incentives
- Per our current union contract, a 4% raise overall each year until 2027
Incentive pays
Additional pay for education, specialty units and foreign language (not all languages apply at this time)
- Associate’s degree: 2%
- Bachelor’s degree: 4%
- Master’s degree: 6%
- Specialty units: 2%-10%
- Patrol incentive: 1% (2% as of 2025)
- Longevity incentive: 2-16%
- Foreign language incentive: $0.95 ($1.90 for two or more languages) added to hourly base rate on all compensated hours. *Not all languages apply at this time*

Public safety testing
The first step of our application process for entry level deputies is Public Safety Testing, a third party contractor that most agencies in our region use.
Select King County Sheriff’s Office as the department you wish to test for. There are options for in-person or virtual testing. There is usually a cost associated with this testing, however, we will pay for your testing! Use code: kcso2025 at checkout to pay for the testing.
Do not apply directly through governmentjobs.com prior to passing both parts of your PST test.

Physical abilities test
The PST testing also requires a “PAT” or physical abilities test. Check out this link for more information:

Once you've tested, your scores will go to the KCSO Human Resources Department. You will then receive some formal paperwork along with a formal government jobs application. -
Additional paperwork and oral board
Once you’ve tested, your scores will go to the KCSO Human Resources Department. You will then receive an invitation to fill out some additional paperwork along with a formal government jobs application. Once complete, KCSO will perform a criminal history check prior to inviting you to self-schedule an oral board (panel interview).

Background check
If you pass the interview, we will contact you again and ask you to fill out an extensive background packet.
Once KCSO background detectives receive the background packet from you, a background detective will us this to complete several different background checks.

Background interview and polygraph
Once completed, you’ll be invited to a background interview, polygraph and Captains/Commanders interview, these usually occur on the same day. It’s at this point in the process that we will give you a conditional offer of employment. We will then schedule you for medical and psychological examinations.
If you pass both the medical and psych, we will officially hire you give you an academy date. The academy is run by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission or CJTC for short.

Basic law enforcement academy (BLEA)
Once hired, you’ll will attend a course called Pre-Blea (Basic Law Enforcement Academy) with the department complete hiring documentation, uniform and gear issue, meet with the Guild (union), and take other classes to help prepare you for the Academy. All training with us before and after the academy is paid.
The academy is four and a half months long and run on a 10 hour shifts four days a week schedule in the City of Burien. The academy is not a bootcamp and you do not live on site during your training. All the departments in the state use BLEA except State Patrol who use their own academy. Check out website below for more information about the BLEA.

$25,000 hiring bonus now in effect.
