First reported outbreak caused by Marburg virus in Ethiopia

Be aware: An outbreak of Marburg Virus (MVD) is occurring in Ethiopia.
- No suspected or confirmed cases of MVD related to this outbreak have been reported anywhere outside of Ethiopia as of December 3, 2025.
- The risk of spread to the United States is considered low at this time; however, clinicians should be aware of the potential for imported cases.
- Currently, the CDC is not implementing additional surveillance of travelers from Ethiopia at U.S. ports of entry.
Assess travel history
- Obtain a detailed travel history from patients with suspected MVD or other hemorrhagic fevers, especially those who have been in affected areas of Ethiopia recently.
- Counsel patients with planned travel to an MVD outbreak-affected area on ways to prevent exposure during their travel. Travelers should monitor themselves for symptoms of MVD while in the outbreak area and for 21 days after leaving.
Report: Immediately report suspected cases of MVD and other viral hemorrhagic fevers to Public Health at 206-296-4774.
